Yu Hua

Born on 3 April 1960 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China, Yu Hua is a Chinese novelist and short-story writer.

He worked as a dentist for five years before turning to fiction writing in 1983. He has explained that he disliked "looking into people's mouths the whole day" and that writing offered him greater creative freedom and flexibility.
